Mandatory Identity Verification from 18 November 2025 - GBH Law

Companies House has confirmed that mandatory identity verification for company directors, members of limited liability partnerships (LLPs) and people with significant control (PSCs) will begin from 18 November 2025.

The requirement to verify your identity has been voluntary since April this year, and the mandatory regime will now be rolled out over a 12-month transition period.

From 18 November 2025

  • New directors and LLP members will need to verify their identity and provide their personal code to incorporate a company/LLP or to be appointed to an existing company/LLP.
  • Existing directors and LLP members will need to confirm that they have verified their identity and provide their personal code at the same time as the company/LLP files its next annual confirmation statement within the 12 month transition period starting on 18 November 2025. If a person is a director of more than one company, they will need to do this for each company. However, it is by the first deadline that they must ensure they are verified.
  • New PSCs will need to verify their identity and provide their personal code within 14 days of being added to the Companies House register.
  • Existing PSCs will need to verify their identity and submit their personal code. The timing for this depends on their situation:
  1. If a person is both a director and a PSC of the same company, they need to provide their personal code separately for each role:
  1. as a director, they must provide their personal code in the company’s confirmation statement; and
  2. as a PSC, they must provide their personal code using a separate Companies House service within 14 days of the company’s confirmation statement date. This service will be available when the requirement comes into force on 18 November 2025.
  1. If a person is a PSC but not a director of the same company, they must provide their personal code within the first 14 days of their birth month. For example, if someone’s date of birth is 22 January, the 14-day period begins on 1 January and ends on 14 January.
  • Directors, LLP members and PSCs will also be able to check the Companies House register to see the identity verification due dates for all their roles.

How to verify your identity

Individuals can verify their identity directly with Companies House free of charge  through GOV.UK One Login, or alternatively through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider. Please see the Companies House guidance on the methods available for IDV https://www.gov.uk/guidance/verify-your-identity-for-companies-house.

Once an individual has successfully verified their identity, they will receive a personal code from Companies House.

Other roles

Companies House has confirmed that it will introduce mandatory identity verification for people who file at Companies House, limited partnerships, corporate directors of companies, corporate members of LLPs and officers of corporate PSCs at a later date.
