Companies House Identity Verification - GBH Law

Companies House is rolling out identity verification requirements for all new and existing company directors, people with significant control (PSCs) and those filing information and documents with Companies House.

Identity verification will also apply to other types of corporate bodies. For example, members (and PSCs) of a limited liability partnership will also need to verify their identity.

These changes are being introduced under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 to enhance the integrity of the UK’s corporate register and tackle economic crime.

The identity verification requirements will be implemented in stages from spring 2025 and will continue to be rolled out in phases with transitional periods continuing until autumn 2026. As the expected timetable for implementation stands currently:

From 8 April 2025
-Individuals can voluntarily verify their identity directly with Companies House via the GOV.UK One Login service, using one of three channels:

  • the ID Check app, using photo ID (eg UK passport) and completing a facial scan;
  • the web portal, by completing security questions online; or
  • in person at a Post Office offering in-branch verification.

-Individuals can also voluntarily verify their identity indirectly through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP). ACSPs are individuals or organisations, such as solicitors, undertaking an anti-money laundering supervised activity, who have registered with Companies House.

By Autumn 2025

  • Identity verification will be mandatory for new directors and PSCs on incorporation and appointment.
  • A 12 month transition phase will commence for all existing directors and PSCs who will be required to verify their identity as part of the annual confirmation statement filing.

By Spring 2026

  • Identity verification will be compulsory for all individuals filing information or documents at Companies House on behalf of a company.
  • It will be compulsory for third party agents filing on behalf of companies to be registered as an ACSP.

By the end of 2026

  • The transition period for requiring identity verification will be complete and compliance activity will be started against those who have failed to complete identity verification where required to do so.
  • Additional filing requirements will be introduced for limited partnerships.
